perf MANIFEST: Add arch/*/include/uapi/asm/bpf_perf_event.h to the perf tarball Needed to build tools/lib/bpf/ on various arches other than x86_64, notably arm64 when using the perf tarballs generated by: $ make help | grep perf- perf-tar-src-pkg - Build the perf source tarball with no compression perf-targz-src-pkg - Build the perf source tarball with gzip compression perf-tarbz2-src-pkg - Build the perf source tarball with bz2 compression perf-tarxz-src-pkg - Build the perf source tarball with xz compression perf-tarzst-src-pkg - Build the perf source tarball with zst compression $ Building with BPF support was opt-in in perf for a long time, and testing it via the tarball main kernel Makefile targets in an architecture other than x86_64 was an odd case. I had noticed this at some point earlier this year while cross building perf to some arches, including arm64, but it fell thru the cracks, see the Link tag below. Fix it now by adding those arch/*/include/uapi/asm/bpf_perf_event.h files to the MANIFEST file used in building the perf source tarball. perf tools: Get all of tools/{arch,include}/ in the MANIFEST Now that I'm switching the container builds from using a local volume pointing to the kernel repository with the perf sources, instead getting a detached tarball to be able to use a container cluster, some places broke because I forgot to put some of the required files in tools/perf/MANIFEST, namely some bitsperlong.h files. So, to fix it do the same as for tools/build/ and pack the whole tools/arch/ directory. perf tools: Fix make tarballs The patch series that introduced the top level tools/ makefile and the libtraceevent broke this feature where files needed to build in a detached tarball were not included in the MANIFEST file and thus not included in the tarball. Fix it by adding the relevant files to the MANIFEST. tools build: Add new build support Adding new build framework into 'tools/build' to be used by tools. There's no change for actual building at this point, it comes in the next patches. The idea and more details are explained in the 'tools/build/Documentation/Build.txt' file. I adopted everything from the kernel build system, with some changes to allow for multiple binaries build definitions. While the kernel's build output is single image (forget modules) we need to be able to build several binaries/libraries. perf tests: Add LLVM test for eBPF on-the-fly compiling Previous patches introduce llvm__compile_bpf() to compile source file to eBPF object. This patch adds testcase to test it. It also tests libbpf by opening generated object after applying next patch which introduces HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT option. Since llvm__compile_bpf() prints long messages which users who don't explicitly test llvm doesn't care, this patch set verbose to -1 to suppress all debug, warning and error message, and hint user use 'perf test -v' to see the full output. For the same reason, if clang is not found in PATH and there's no [llvm] section in .perfconfig, skip this test. tools lib: Move argv_{split,free} from tools/perf/util/ This came from the kernel lib/argv_split.c, so move it to tools/lib/argv_split.c, to get it closer to the kernel structure. We need to audit the usage of argv_split() to figure out if it is really necessary to do have one allocation per argv[] entry, looking at one of its users I guess that is not the case and we probably are even leaking those allocations by not using argv_free() judiciously, for later. With this we further remove stuff from tools/perf/util/, reducing the perf specific codebase and encouraging other tools/ code to use these routines so as to keep the style and constructs used with the kernel. tools perf: Move from sane_ctype.h obtained from git to the Linux's original We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've copied. This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(), etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/ and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements are made to the original code. Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper. tools: Copy lib/hweight.c from the kernel sources Instead of accessing it directly, as it uses EXPORT_SYMBOL, that has no meaning in tools/perf and because we removed the stubs for it, i.e. we removed the tools/include/linux/export.h file. This fixes the build for the detached tarball sources cases and removes one more source of entanglement with the kernel sources. tools: Copy lib/rbtree.c to tools/lib/ So that we can remove kernel specific stuff we've been stubbing out via a tools/include/linux/export.h that gets removed in this patch and to avoid breakages in the future like the one fixed recently where rcupdate.h started being used in rbtree.h. perf build: Install libsymbol locally when building The perf build currently has a '-Itools/lib' on the CC command line. This causes issues as the libapi, libsubcmd, libtraceevent, libbpf and libsymbol headers are all found via this path, making it impossible to override include behavior. Change the libsymbol build mirroring the libbpf, libsubcmd, libapi, libperf and libtraceevent build, so that it is installed in a directory along with its headers. A later change will modify the include behavior. Don't build kallsyms.o as part of util as this will lead to duplicate definitions. Add kallsym's directory to the MANIFEST rather than individual files, so that the Build and Makefile are added to a source tar ball. tools lib: Move find_next_bit.c to tools/lib/ The commit that introduced it should've moved it to the same place, plus the 'tools/' prefix, but instead moved it to a bogus tools/lib/util/ directory, being the only file there. Move it to tools/lib/find_bit.c, picking the name for the file where these routines live since: 8f6f19dd5143 ("lib: move find_last_bit to lib/find_next_bit.c") Next step is to make tools/lib/find_bit.c to differ from lib/find_bit.c just in removing what is not used by tools/. tools: Introduce str_error_r() The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else. But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine Linux, where musl libc is used. So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is returned.
