tools: Move Makefile.arch from perf/config to tools/scripts After this patch other directories can use this architecture detector without directly including it from perf's directory. Libbpf would utilize it to get proper $(ARCH) so it can receive correct uapi include directory. Tested-by: Naveen N. perf tests: Add testing for Makefile.perf Currently we test only builds through top level Makefile, but seems like there's a bunch of users using Makefile.perf directly. perf tools: Add automated make test suite Adding automated test for testing the build process. To run it you need to be in perf directory or specify one with PERF variable. It's also possible to specify optional Makefile to test via MK variable. Whole suite is executed twice, the second time with O=/tmp/xxx option added. To run the whole suite: $ make -f tests/make - make_pure: cd . && make -f Makefile test: test -x ./perf - make_clean_all: cd . && make -f Makefile clean all test: test -x ./perf - make_python_perf_so: cd . && make -f Makefile python/perf.so test: test -f ./python/perf.so - make_debug: cd . && make -f Makefile DEBUG=1 test: test -x ./perf - make_no_libperl: cd . && make -f Makefile NO_LIBPERL=1 test: test -x ./perf You see command line for 'make_pure' test right away, and the output is stored into 'make_pure' file. To run simple test: $ make -f tests/make make_debug - make_debug: cd . && make -f Makefile DEBUG=1 test: test -x ./perf At this moment tests checks for successfull build and for existence of several built files. Additional after-build checks could be added. perf build: Test correct path of perf in build-test If an 'O' is passed to 'make build-test', many 'test -x' and 'test -f' will fail because perf resides in a different directory. Fix this by computing PERF_OUT according to 'O' and test correct output files. For make_kernelsrc and make_kernelsrc_tools, set KBUILD_OUTPUT_DIR instead because the path is different from others ($(O)/perf vs $(O)/tools/perf). perf build: Use feature dump file for build-test To prevent the feature check tests to run repeately, one time per 'tests/make' target/test, this patch utilizes the previously introduced 'feature-dump' make target and FEATURES_DUMP variable, making sure that the feature checkers run only once when doing build-test for normal test cases. However, since standard users doesn't reuse features dump result, we'd better give an option to check their behaviors. The above feature should be used to make build-test faster only. Only utilize it for build-test. perf build: Pass O option to kernel makefile in build-test Kernel makefile only follows an 'O' option passed from command line explicitely. In build-test with 'O' option set, kernel makefile contaminate kernel source directory. Build test also fail if we don't create output directory manually. K_O_OPT is added and passed to kernel makefile if 'O' is passed to build-test. perf build: Set parallel making options build-test 'make build-test' is painful because of time consuming. In a full test, all test cases are built twice with tools/perf/Makefile and tools/perf/Makefile.perf. 'Makefile' automatically computes parallel options for make, but 'Makefile.perf' not, so all test cases is built with one job. It is very slow. This patch adds '-j' options to Makefile.perf testing. It computes parallel building options like what tools/perf/Makefile does, and pass '-j' option to Makefile.perf test. perf build-test: Honour JOBS to override detection of number of cores When one does: $ make -C tools/perf build-test The makefile in tools/perf/tests/ will, just like the main one, detect how many cores are in the system and use it with -j. Sometimes we may need to override that, for instance, when using icecream or distcc to use multiple machines in the build process, then we need to, as with the main makefile, use: $ make JOBS=N -C tools/perf build-test Fix the tests makefile to honour that. make use of make variable CURDIR instead of calling pwd make already provides the current working directory in a variable, so make use of it instead of forking a shell. Also replace usage of PWD by CURDIR. PWD is provided by most shells, but not all, so this makes the build system more robust. perf tests: Fix installation tests path setup Currently installation tests work only over x86_64, adding arch check to make it work over i386 as well. NOTE looks like x86 is the only arch running tests, we need some IS_(32/64) flag to make this generic. perf tools: Fix perf-read-vdsox32 not building and lib64 install dir Commit: c6e5e9fbc3ea ("perf tools: Fix building error in x86_64 when dwarf unwind is on") removed the definition of IS_X86_64 but not all places using it, with the consequence that perf-read-vdsox32 would not be built anymore, and the default lib install directory was 'lib' instead of 'lib64'. perf build: Make binutil libraries opt in binutils is GPLv3 so distributions cannot ship perf linked against libbfd and libiberty as the licenses are incompatible. Rather than defaulting the build to opting in to libbfd and libiberty support and opting out via NO_LIBBFD=1 and NO_DEMANGLE=1, make building against the libraries optional and enabled with BUILD_NONDISTRO=1. perf build: Make libunwind opt-in rather than opt-out Having multiple unwinding libraries makes the perf code harder to understand and we have unused/untested code paths. Perf made BPF support an opt-out rather than opt-in feature. As libbpf has a libelf dependency, elfutils that provides libelf will also provide libdw. When libdw is present perf will use libdw unwinding rather than libunwind unwinding even if libunwind support is compiled in. Rather than have libunwind built into perf and never used, explicitly disable the support and make it opt-in. perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpf By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set. The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent are wired into Makefile.perf. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make. The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in /path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel. Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check failed. tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags. perf report: Support LLVM for addr2line() In addition to the existing support for libbfd and calling out to an external addr2line command, add support for using libllvm directly. This is both faster than libbfd, and can be enabled in distro builds (the LLVM license has an explicit provision for GPLv2 compatibility). Thus, it is set as the primary choice if available. As an example, running 'perf report' on a medium-size profile with DWARF-based backtraces took 58 seconds with LLVM, 78 seconds with libbfd, 153 seconds with external llvm-addr2line, and I got tired and aborted the test after waiting for 55 minutes with external bfd addr2line (which is the default for perf as compiled by distributions today). Evidently, for this case, the bfd addr2line process needs 18 seconds (on a 5.2 GHz Zen 3) to load the .debug ELF in question, hits the 1-second timeout and gets killed during initialization, getting restarted anew every time. Having an in-process addr2line makes this much more robust. As future extensions, libllvm can be used in many other places where we currently use libbfd or other libraries: - Symbol enumeration (in particular, for PE binaries). - Demangling (including non-Itanium demangling, e.g. Microsoft or Rust). - Disassembling (perf annotate). However, these are much less pressing; most people don't profile PE binaries, and perf has non-bfd paths for ELF. The same with demangling; the default _cxa_demangle path works fine for most users, and while bfd objdump can be slow on large binaries, it is possible to use --objdump=llvm-objdump to get the speed benefits. (It appears LLVM-based demangling is very simple, should we want that.) Tested with LLVM 14, 15, 16, 18 and 19. For some reason, LLVM 12 was not correctly detected using feature_check, and thus was not tested. perf build: Make libunwind opt-in rather than opt-out Having multiple unwinding libraries makes the perf code harder to understand and we have unused/untested code paths. Perf made BPF support an opt-out rather than opt-in feature. As libbpf has a libelf dependency, elfutils that provides libelf will also provide libdw. When libdw is present perf will use libdw unwinding rather than libunwind unwinding even if libunwind support is compiled in. Rather than have libunwind built into perf and never used, explicitly disable the support and make it opt-in. perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpf By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set. The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent are wired into Makefile.perf. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make. The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in /path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel. Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check failed. tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags. perf tools: Remove dependency on libaudit All architectures now support HAVE_SYSCALL_TABLE_SUPPORT, so the flag is no longer needed. With the removal of the flag, the related GENERIC_SYSCALL_TABLE can also be removed. libaudit was only used as a fallback for when HAVE_SYSCALL_TABLE_SUPPORT was not defined, so libaudit is also no longer needed for any architecture. perf build: Make binutil libraries opt in binutils is GPLv3 so distributions cannot ship perf linked against libbfd and libiberty as the licenses are incompatible. perf build: Make libunwind opt-in rather than opt-out Having multiple unwinding libraries makes the perf code harder to understand and we have unused/untested code paths. Perf made BPF support an opt-out rather than opt-in feature. As libbpf has a libelf dependency, elfutils that provides libelf will also provide libdw. When libdw is present perf will use libdw unwinding rather than libunwind unwinding even if libunwind support is compiled in. Rather than have libunwind built into perf and never used, explicitly disable the support and make it opt-in. perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpf By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set. The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent are wired into Makefile.perf. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make. The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in /path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel. Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check failed. tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags. perf report: Support LLVM for addr2line() In addition to the existing support for libbfd and calling out to an external addr2line command, add support for using libllvm directly. This is both faster than libbfd, and can be enabled in distro builds (the LLVM license has an explicit provision for GPLv2 compatibility). Thus, it is set as the primary choice if available. As an example, running 'perf report' on a medium-size profile with DWARF-based backtraces took 58 seconds with LLVM, 78 seconds with libbfd, 153 seconds with external llvm-addr2line, and I got tired and aborted the test after waiting for 55 minutes with external bfd addr2line (which is the default for perf as compiled by distributions today). Evidently, for this case, the bfd addr2line process needs 18 seconds (on a 5.2 GHz Zen 3) to load the .debug ELF in question, hits the 1-second timeout and gets killed during initialization, getting restarted anew every time. Having an in-process addr2line makes this much more robust. As future extensions, libllvm can be used in many other places where we currently use libbfd or other libraries: - Symbol enumeration (in particular, for PE binaries). - Demangling (including non-Itanium demangling, e.g. Microsoft or Rust). - Disassembling (perf annotate). However, these are much less pressing; most people don't profile PE binaries, and perf has non-bfd paths for ELF. The same with demangling; the default _cxa_demangle path works fine for most users, and while bfd objdump can be slow on large binaries, it is possible to use --objdump=llvm-objdump to get the speed benefits. (It appears LLVM-based demangling is very simple, should we want that.) Tested with LLVM 14, 15, 16, 18 and 19. For some reason, LLVM 12 was not correctly detected using feature_check, and thus was not tested. perf build: Test correct path of perf in build-test If an 'O' is passed to 'make build-test', many 'test -x' and 'test -f' will fail because perf resides in a different directory. Fix this by computing PERF_OUT according to 'O' and test correct output files. For make_kernelsrc and make_kernelsrc_tools, set KBUILD_OUTPUT_DIR instead because the path is different from others ($(O)/perf vs $(O)/tools/perf). perf build: Test correct path of perf in build-test If an 'O' is passed to 'make build-test', many 'test -x' and 'test -f' will fail because perf resides in a different directory. Fix this by computing PERF_OUT according to 'O' and test correct output files. For make_kernelsrc and make_kernelsrc_tools, set KBUILD_OUTPUT_DIR instead because the path is different from others ($(O)/perf vs $(O)/tools/perf). perf tools: Add a build-test variant to use in builds from a tarball To use in automated tests inside containers from a tarball generated by 'make perf-tar-src-pkg*', where testing building from a tarball is obviously not needed, so add a 'build-test-tarball' for that case. And don't build with gtk2 as this complicates things for cross builds where we don't always have all the libraries a full perf build requires available for the target arch, ditto for static builds. perf build: Test correct path of perf in build-test If an 'O' is passed to 'make build-test', many 'test -x' and 'test -f' will fail because perf resides in a different directory. Fix this by computing PERF_OUT according to 'O' and test correct output files. For make_kernelsrc and make_kernelsrc_tools, set KBUILD_OUTPUT_DIR instead because the path is different from others ($(O)/perf vs $(O)/tools/perf). perf build: Test correct path of perf in build-test If an 'O' is passed to 'make build-test', many 'test -x' and 'test -f' will fail because perf resides in a different directory. Fix this by computing PERF_OUT according to 'O' and test correct output files. However, since standard users doesn't reuse features dump result, we'd better give an option to check their behaviors. The above feature should be used to make build-test faster only. perf tests: Add testing for Makefile.perf Currently we test only builds through top level Makefile, but seems like there's a bunch of users using Makefile.perf directly. Changing the make suite to be run for Makefile.perf as well. It takes now considerable amount of time, but hopefully we catch more issues. Also fixing the output indentation for make_kernelsrc and make_kernelsrc_tools tests.
