Documentation/HOWTO: add cross-references to other documents Add cross references for the documents mentioned at HOWTO and are under the Documentation/ directory, using the ReST notation. It should be noticed that HOWTO also mentions the /README file. We opted to not touch it, for now, as making it build on Sphinx would require it to be moved to a Documentation/foo directory. docs: kernel-docs: shorten the lengthy doc title The original title comes from copying the content from a web page that covered various mixed computer-science material. Within the kernel documentation and its current structure, the title can be shortened. Other titles considered, but not selected were: - Index of More Kernel Documentation - Further Kernel Documentation - References to Further Kernel Documentation Shorten the title. docs: kernel-docs: order reference from newest to oldest The documents on each section of this document are ordered by its published date, from the newest to the oldest. In the kernel-docs.rst, the references on each section of this document are intended to be ordered by its published date, from the newest to the oldest. The Linux Kernel Module Programming Guide was published in 2021; so, it is placed at the top as the most recent publication after the rolling-version "Linux Kernel Mailing List Glossary" reference. kernel-docs: Add book to process/kernel-docs.rst Add a reference to my new book, The Linux Memory Manager, an in-depth exploration of the memory management subsystem, to process/kernel-docs.rst. This is not yet published, but the full draft is available on pre-order, so it seems worthwhile adding it here. The situation is made clear in the 'notes' section. The 'pre-release' was made available in February 2025, and full release is scheduled for Fall 2025. The book's ISBN-13 is 978-1718504462. The document will be updated upon release to reflect this. Replace HTTP links with HTTPS ones: Documentation/process Rationale: Reduces attack surface on kernel devs opening the links for MITM as HTTPS traffic is much harder to manipulate. Deterministic algorithm: For each file: If not .svg: For each line: If doesn't contain `\bxmlns\b`: For each link, `\bhttp://[^# \t\r\n]*(?:\w|/)`: If both the HTTP and HTTPS versions return 200 OK and serve the same content: Replace HTTP with HTTPS. Documentation/kernel-docs.txt: Add 4 paper/book references Background/Reasoning: Books: ------ * Linux Kernel Networking by Rami Rosen While some parts are quite short and could be more carefully explained it's still a good recomendation for understanding linux kernel networking, (IMHO) * Linux Treiber entwickeln: It sure is a drawback that this is a german book. But it's quite recent, well structured and there are also other non-english (spanish) books/papers in this list. Papers: ------- * On Submitting kernel Patches Contains 2 case studies of bigger patch sets and how (or how not) they were merged. I found it helpful * Tracing the Way of Data in a TCP Connection through the Linux Kernel Since this was written by me this inclusion may be a bit biased :p Neitherless I think this gives a good introduction on understanding/exploring linux internals using ftrace and an overview of Linux TCP internals. Documentation: fix links to mailing list services There have been some changes to the way mailing lists are hosted at kernel.org. This patch does the following: 1. fixes links that are pointing at the outdated resources 2. removes an outdated patchbomb admonition We still don't particularly want or welcome huge patchbombs, but they are less likely to overload our systems.
