Documentation/HOWTO: add cross-references to other documents Add cross references for the documents mentioned at HOWTO and are under the Documentation/ directory, using the ReST notation. It should be noticed that HOWTO also mentions the /README file. We opted to not touch it, for now, as making it build on Sphinx would require it to be moved to a Documentation/foo directory. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!

Docs: Bring SubmittingPatches more into the git era Much of the information in SubmittingPatches shows its pre-git history. Clean that up a bit and rephrase things with the assumption that developers will be using git. Also rewrite the "pull requests" section and include information on using signed tags. Let it rip!

Documentation: Add "how to write a good patch summary" to SubmittingPatches Unfortunately many patch submissions are arriving with painfully poor patch descriptions. As a result of the discussion on LKML: http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/4/15/296 explain how to submit a better patch description, in the (perhaps vain) hope that maintainers won't end up having to rewrite the git commit logs as often as they do today. add a trivial patch style checker We are seeing increasing levels of minor patch style violations in submissions to the mailing lists as well as making it into the tree. These detract from the quality of the submission and cause unnessary work for reviewers. As a first step package up the current state of the patch style checker and include it in the kernel tree. Let it rip!

Let it rip!

Update DCO ("signoff") rules to 1.1 This adds a clause that notes explicitly that the person doing the sign-off knows that the project (and his sign-off) is public and will possibly get archived and re-distributed.

add a trivial patch style checker We are seeing increasing levels of minor patch style violations in submissions to the mailing lists as well as making it into the tree. These detract from the quality of the submission and cause unnessary work for reviewers. As a first step package up the current state of the patch style checker and include it in the kernel tree. Add instructions suggesting running it on submissions. This adds version v0.01 of the checkpatch.pl script. Docs: Bring SubmittingPatches more into the git era Much of the information in SubmittingPatches shows its pre-git history. Clean that up a bit and rephrase things with the assumption that developers will be using git. Also rewrite the "pull requests" section and include information on using signed tags. checkpatch, SubmittingPatches: suggest line wrapping commit messages at 75 columns Commit messages lines are sometimes overly long. Suggest line wrapping at 75 columns so the default git commit log indentation of 4 plus the commit message text still fits on an 80 column screen. Let it rip!
