b272d5c4a3 mtd: nand: davinci: Reinitialize the HW ECC engine in 4bit hwctl
commit f6d7c1b559 upstream.

This fixes subpage writes when using 4-bit HW ECC.

There has been numerous reports about ECC errors with devices using this
driver for a while. Also the 4-bit ECC has been reported as broken with
subpages in [1] and with 16 bits NANDs in the driver and in mach* board
files both in mainline and in the vendor BSPs.

What I saw with 4-bit ECC on a 16bits NAND (on an LCDK) which got me to
try reinitializing the ECC engine:
- R/W on whole pages properly generates/checks RS code
- try writing the 1st subpage only of a blank page, the subpage is well
  written and the RS code properly generated, re-reading the same page
  the HW detects some ECC error, reading the same page again no ECC
  error is detected

Note that the ECC engine is already reinitialized in the 1-bit case.

Tested on my LCDK with UBI+UBIFS using subpages.
This could potentially get rid of the issue workarounded in [1].

53fc3ef269 ubi: Be more paranoid while seaching for the most recent Fastmap
commit 74f2c6e9a4 upstream.

Since PEB erasure is asynchornous it can happen that there is
more than one Fastmap on the MTD. This is fine because the attach logic
will pick the Fastmap data structure with the highest sequence number.

On a not so well configured MTD stack spurious ECC errors are common.
Causes can be different, bad hardware, wrong operating modes, etc...
If the most current Fastmap renders bad due to ECC errors UBI might
pick an older Fastmap to attach from.
While this can only happen on an anyway broken setup it will show
completely different sympthoms and makes finding the root cause much
more difficult.
So, be debug friendly and fall back to scanning mode of we're facing
an ECC error while scanning for Fastmap.

7c5a2eab34 ubi: Make volume resize power cut aware
commit 4946784bd3 upstream.

When the volume resize operation shrinks a volume,
LEBs will be unmapped. Since unmapping will not erase these
LEBs immediately we have to wait for that operation to finish.
Otherwise in case of a power cut right after writing the new
volume table the UBI attach process can find more LEBs than the
volume table knows. This will render the UBI image unattachable.

Fix this issue by waiting for erase to complete and write the new
volume table afterward.

298fce960d mtd: nand: fix bug writing 1 byte less than page size
commit 144f4c9839 upstream.

nand_do_write_ops() determines if it is writing a partial page with the
formula:
	part_pagewr = (column || writelen < (mtd->writesize - 1))

When 'writelen' is exactly 1 byte less than the NAND page size the formula
equates to zero, so the code doesn't process it as a partial write,
although it should.
As a consequence the function remains in the while(1) loop with 'writelen'
becoming 0xffffffff and iterating endlessly.

The bug may not be easy to reproduce in Linux since user space tools
usually force the padding or round-up the write size to a page-size
multiple.
This was discovered in U-Boot where the issue can be reproduced by
writing any size that is 1 byte less than a page-size multiple.
For example, on a NAND with 2K page (0x800):
	=> nand erase.part <partition>
	=> nand write $loadaddr <partition> 7ff

[Editor's note: the bug was added in commit 29072b9607, but moved

4631ce7f81 mtd: pmcmsp-flash: Allocating too much in init_msp_flash()
commit 79ad07d457 upstream.

There is a cut and paste issue here. The bug is that we are allocating
more memory than necessary for msp_maps. We should be allocating enough
space for a map_info struct (144 bytes) but we instead allocate enough
for an mtd_info struct (1840 bytes). It's a small waste.

The other part of this is not harmful but when we allocated msp_flash
then we allocated enough space fro a map_info pointer instead of an
mtd_info pointer. But since pointers are the same size it works out
fine.

Anyway, I decided to clean up all three allocations a bit to make them
a bit more consistent and clear.

e66d5f6e1b ubi: Make recover_peb power cut aware
commit 972228d874 upstream.

recover_peb() was never power cut aware,
if a power cut happened right after writing the VID header
upon next attach UBI would blindly use the new partial written
PEB and all data from the old PEB is lost.

In order to make recover_peb() power cut aware, write the new
VID with a proper crc and copy_flag set such that the UBI attach
process will detect whether the new PEB is completely written
or not.
We cannot directly use ubi_eba_atomic_leb_change() since we'd
have to unlock the LEB which is facing a write error.

UBI checks static volumes for data consistency and reads the
whole volume upon first open. If the volume is found erroneous
users of UBI cannot read from it, but another volume update is
possible to fix it. The check is performed by running
ubi_eba_read_leb() on every allocated LEB of the volume.
For static volumes ubi_eba_read_leb() computes the checksum of all
data stored in a LEB. To verify the computed checksum it has to read
the LEB's volume header which stores the original checksum.
If the volume header is not found UBI treats this as fatal internal
error and switches to RO mode. If the UBI device was attached via a
full scan the assumption is correct, the volume header has to be
present as it had to be there while scanning to get known as mapped.
If the attach operation happened via Fastmap the assumption is no
longer correct. When attaching via Fastmap UBI learns the mapping
table from Fastmap's snapshot of the system state and not via a full
scan. It can happen that a LEB got unmapped after a Fastmap was
written to the flash. Then UBI can learn the LEB still as mapped and
accessing it returns only 0xFF bytes. As UBI is not a FTL it is
allowed to have mappings to empty PEBs, it assumes that the layer
above takes care of LEB accounting and referencing.
UBIFS does so using the LEB property tree (LPT).
For static volumes UBI blindly assumes that all LEBs are present and
therefore special actions have to be taken.

The described situation can happen when updating a static volume is
interrupted, either by a user or a power cut.
The volume update code first unmaps all LEBs of a volume and then
writes LEB by LEB. If the sequence of operations is interrupted UBI
detects this either by the absence of LEBs, no volume header present
at scan time, or corrupted payload, detected via checksum.
In the Fastmap case the former method won't trigger as no scan
happened and UBI automatically thinks all LEBs are present.
Only by reading data from a LEB it detects that the volume header is
missing and incorrectly treats this as fatal error.
To deal with the situation ubi_eba_read_leb() from now on checks
whether we attached via Fastmap and handles the absence of a
volume header like a data corruption error.
This way interrupted static volume updates will correctly get detected
also when Fastmap is used.

On this path we return UBI_IO_FF and UBI_IO_FF_BITFLIPS and it
eventually gets passed to ERR_PTR(). We probably dereference the bad
pointer and oops. At that point we've gone read only so it was already
a bad situation...

9ea0602697 mtd: blkdevs: fix potential deadlock + lockdep warnings
commit f3c63795e9 upstream.

Commit 073db4a51e ("mtd: fix: avoid race condition when accessing
mtd->usecount") fixed a race condition but due to poor ordering of the
mutex acquisition, introduced a potential deadlock.

The deadlock can occur, for example, when rmmod'ing the m25p80 module, which
will delete one or more MTDs, along with any corresponding mtdblock
devices. This could potentially race with an acquisition of the block
device as follows.

 -> blktrans_open()
    ->  mutex_lock(&dev->lock);
    ->  mutex_lock(&mtd_table_mutex);

 -> del_mtd_device()
    ->  mutex_lock(&mtd_table_mutex);
    ->  blktrans_notify_remove() -> del_mtd_blktrans_dev()
       ->  mutex_lock(&dev->lock);

This is a classic (potential) ABBA deadlock, which can be fixed by
making the A->B ordering consistent everywhere. There was no real
purpose to the ordering in the original patch, AFAIR, so this shouldn't
be a problem. This ordering was actually already present in
del_mtd_blktrans_dev(), for one, where the function tried to ensure that
its caller already held mtd_table_mutex before it acquired &dev->lock:

        if (mutex_trylock(&mtd_table_mutex)) {
                mutex_unlock(&mtd_table_mutex);
                BUG();
        }

So, reverse the ordering of acquisition of &dev->lock and &mtd_table_mutex so
we always acquire mtd_table_mutex first.

Snippets of the lockdep output follow:

Block drivers are responsible for calling flush_dcache_page() on each

f0958ab02d UBI: fix soft lockup in ubi_check_volume()
commit 9aa272b492 upstream.

Running mtd-utils/tests/ubi-tests/io_basic.c could cause
soft lockup or watchdog reset. It is because *updatevol*
will perform ubi_check_volume() after updating finish
and this function will full scan the updated lebs if the
volume is initialized as STATIC_VOLUME.

This patch adds *cond_resched()* in the loop of lebs scan
to avoid soft lockup.

97df14551c UBI: Fix invalid vfree()
commit f38aed975c upstream.

The logic of vfree()'ing vol->upd_buf is tied to vol->updating.
In ubi_start_update() vol->updating is set long before vmalloc()'ing
vol->upd_buf. If we encounter a write failure in ubi_start_update()
before vmalloc() the UBI device release function will try to vfree()
vol->upd_buf because vol->updating is set.
Fix this by allocating vol->upd_buf directly after setting vol->updating.

cc29b3f344 mtd: cfi_cmdset_0001.c: fix resume for LH28F640BF chips
commit 89cf38dd53 upstream.

After '#echo mem > /sys/power/state' some devices can not be properly resumed
because apparently the MTD Partition Configuration Register has been reset
to default thus the rootfs cannot be mounted cleanly on resume.
An example of this can be found in the SA-1100 Developer's Manual at 9.5.3.3
where the second step of the Sleep Shutdown Sequence is described:
"An internal reset is applied to the SA-1100. All units are reset...".

As workaround we refresh the PCR value as done initially on chip setup.

This behavior and the fix are confirmed by our tests done on 2 different Zaurus
collie units with kernel 3.17.

ff87cb9dcd mtd: m25p80,spi-nor: Fix module aliases for m25p80
commit a5b7616c55 upstream.

m25p80's device ID table is now spi_nor_ids, defined in spi-nor. The
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() macro doesn't work with extern definitions, but
its use was also removed at the same time. Now if m25p80 is built as
a module it doesn't get the necessary aliases to be loaded
automatically.

A clean solution to this will involve defining the list of device
IDs in spi-nor.h and removing struct spi_device_id from the spi-nor
API, but this is quite a large change.

As a quick fix suitable for stable, copy the device IDs back into
m25p80.

cdd8ac40de mtd: move support for struct flash_platform_data into m25p80
commit 32f1b7c835 upstream.

This "type" seems to be an extra hint for m25p80 about the flash. Some
archs register flash_platform_data with "name" set to "m25p80" and then
with a real flash name set in "type". It seems to be a trick specific
to the m25p80 so let's move it out of spi-nor.

20c0fb35f1 mtd: nand: omap: Fix 1-bit Hamming code scheme, omap_calculate_ecc()
commit 40ddbf5069 upstream.

commit 65b97cf6b8 introduced in v3.7 caused a regression
by using a reversed CS_MASK thus causing omap_calculate_ecc to
always fail. As the NAND base driver never checks for .calculate()'s
return value, the zeroed ECC values are used as is without showing
any error to the user. However, this won't work and the NAND device
won't be guarded by any error code.

Fix the issue by using the correct mask.

Code was tested on omap3beagle using the following procedure
- flash the primary bootloader (MLO) from the kernel to the first
NAND partition using nandwrite.
- boot the board from NAND. This utilizes OMAP ROM loader that
relies on 1-bit Hamming code ECC.

It seems that the corrupted partition header on my mtd device triggers
a bug in the ftl. In function build_maps() it will allocate the buffers
needed by the mtd partition, but if something goes wrong such as kmalloc
failure, mtd read error or invalid partition header parameter, it will
free all allocated buffers and then return non-zero. In my case, it
seems that partition header parameter 'NumTransferUnits' is invalid.

And the ftl_freepart() is a function which free all the partition
buffers allocated by build_maps(). Given the build_maps() is a self
cleaning function, so there is no need to invoke this function even
if build_maps() return with error. Otherwise it will causes the
buffers to be freed twice and then weird things would happen.

54c39e9ba3 mtd: nand: reduce the warning noise when the ECC is too weak
In commit 67a9ad9b8a ("mtd: nand: Warn the user if the selected ECC
strength is too weak"), a check was added to inform the user when the
ECC used for a NAND device is weaker than the recommended ECC
advertised by the NAND chip. However, the warning uses WARN_ON(),
which has two undesirable side-effects:

 - It just prints to the kernel log the fact that there is a warning
   in this file, at this line, but it doesn't explain anything about
   the warning itself.

 - It dumps a stack trace which is very noisy, for something that the
   user is most likely not able to fix. If a certain ECC used by the
   kernel is weaker than the advertised one, it's most likely to make
   sure the kernel uses an ECC that is compatible with the one used by
   the bootloader, and changing the bootloader may not necessarily be
   easy. Therefore, normal users would not be able to do anything to
   fix this very noisy warning, and will have to suffer from it at
   every kernel boot. At least every time I see this stack trace in my
   kernel boot log, I wonder what new thing is broken, just to realize
   that it's once again this NAND ECC warning.

Therefore, this commit turns:

Commig "604b592 UBI: fix rb_tree node comparison in add_map"

volumes RB-tree sorting criteria. This patch fixes the problem.

4251c2a670 Most of this is cleaning up various driver sysfs permissions so we can
re-add the perm check (we unified the module param and sysfs checks, but
 the module ones were stronger so we weakened them temporarily).

 Param parsing gets documented, and also "--" now forces args to be
 handed to init (and ignored by the kernel).

 Module NX/RO protections get tightened: we now set them before calling
 parse_args().

 Cheers,
 Rusty.
