If the User-Mode Instruction Prevention CPU feature is available and enabled, a general protection fault will be issued if the instructions sgdt, sldt, sidt, str or smsw are executed from user-mode context (CPL > 0). If the fault was caused by any of the instructions protected by UMIP, fixup_umip_exception() will emulate dummy results for these instructions as follows: in virtual-8086 and protected modes, sgdt, sidt and smsw are emulated; str and sldt are not emulated. No emulation is done for user-space long mode processes. If emulation is successful, the emulated result is passed to the user space program and no SIGSEGV signal is emitted. Linux kernel ============ This file was moved to Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst Please notice that there are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or ``make pdfdocs``. There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory, several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation. See Documentation/00-INDEX for a list of what is contained in each file. Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
