The pattern

A paragraph or section introduces a new idea without establishing how it relates to the current thread. The prose may be clear sentence by sentence but still makes the reader wonder, "Why are we talking about this now?"

This happens at two levels:

Paragraph level: the next paragraph changes subject before the relationship is clear.
Section level: a new section appears without earning its place in the argument or narrative.

The repair is usually small: add the missing relationship before or immediately after the new idea, move the idea to where it belongs, or remove it if it does not serve the piece.

Why it seems distinct

This is not the same as a vague back-reference. A sentence can name every noun precisely and still have no clear reason to follow the previous paragraph.

It also creates a useful tension with pattern 28, signposting and announcements. The answer is not "Now let's discuss X." That announces the turn without explaining it. A real bridge states the relationship between the ideas.

Test

Ask: can a cold reader explain why this idea follows the previous one using only the published text?

If yes, preserve the transition. Do not add hand-holding.
If no, add the missing relationship, reorder the material, or cut the orphaned idea.

Deliberate hard cuts, scene changes, and section boundaries are valid when the relationship is inferable or the break serves the form.

Before:

Smaller instruction files are easier for an agent to retrieve at the right moment.
